As we know already, a servlet is a server side applet. Servlets are loaded and executed by a Web Server. So, to run servlets we need a Web Server that supports the servlet API. The grandfather of them all is the Java Web Server from Javasoft (now known as the Java Software Division of Sun Microsystems), To run Java Server Pages, a web server is needed. There are many web servers in the market such as IIS, Apache etc. and many execute Java Server Pages, but they need additional Plug Ins.ex:IIS needs JRun as a Plug in to execute JSP. Then, there is always a risk of compatibility and security from third party vendors. To overcome these risks and to run Java applications like Java Server Pages and servlets, the inventors of Java Sun Microsystems came up with a web server written in pure java Java Web Server. Java Web Server is written in Java, so it carries all the advantages of Java, Java Web Server is an implementation of the Java Server Architecture, which defines a generic server and service architecture defined services, the server process, and the servlet API. Java Web Server is the first to implement these frameworks almost completely in Java.
