The rise of server-side applications is the latest and the most exciting thing going on the Internet. When the Java language was first introduced by Sun Microsystems Inc.' its purpose was to have greater interactivity with the web pages. Applets were ,introduced thinking that it would solve the issue, but the major issues were compatibility and bandwidth. Applets are embedded directly into web pages and downloaded at the client's browser. Applets take a long time to download and moreover the client must have a compatible browser. This has given rise to server side Java programming. Now, Sun Microsystems Inc., has introduced what is known as Servlets as its answer to Server-side programming, Java Servlets are a key component of Serverside Java development. Servlets are used to create dynamic content. ServIets can be used to extend the functionality of any Java enabled web server to provide a powerful and efficient Server-side programming. Servlets are a replacement for CGI scripts. The diagram below illustrates the use of servlet, where a client is accessing the database using a servlet in the middle tier. A servlet runs inside the Java Virtual Machine and has no Graphical User Interface. Since the servIet is running on the server side, it does not depend on browser compatibility.
