Changing The Size Of The Image

In Photoshop, you can modify the image size as well as the resolution. While enlarging the image, Photoshop creates the needed pixels to increase the resolution depending on the existing image. This is called resampling. Photoshop uses a technique to enlarge an image while retaining its resolution called interpolation. There are three interpolation methods: Nearest Neighbor, Bilinear and Bi cubic. You can specify the desired method in the Resample Image pull down window after checking the check box. Check the Constrain Proportion check box to maintain the aspect ratio of the image.

If you wish to decrease the size of the image then there is no interpolation involved. Photoshop will discard the proper number of pixels to cut down the image to the desired size. You should always keep in mind that PhotoShop uses logical algorithm to down size an image and hence the image quality may get detoriated.
