Dynamic as it's used in Dynamic HTML doesn't follow the traditional dictionary definition of the word. In the context of HTML, dynamic means subject to change at any time.

HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language, and consists of a set of tags that define how a page should be displayed on the browser. In the early days of the Web, these tags were based on structure and content, which mean that the user's machine could interpret the tags in the best way it could.

Traditional HTML is static. The HTML tags, used to create a Web page, are interpreted by the browser as the page is loaded. The tags tell the browser what kind of headings to use, where to place new paragraphs, which addresses to associate with hyperlinks, where to put images, and so on. When the browser is finished, the page is displayed and all processing stops.

One of the latest and most useful developments is called a style sheet. A style sheet basically is an extension of HTML that allows a much finer degree of control over how the browser interprets elements, resulting in more control over the appearance and placement of text and other objects on a Web Page. After all the style rules are defined and interpreted, the browser displays the page and there it sits.

Dynamic HTML is a page that can change after the server is finished delivering the page to the browser. Dynamic HTML means, a Web page that can react to the user without relying on the server or depending on an embedded program. Dynamic HTML can change itself.

Does this mean radically changing the old HTML we all know the H1 tag and the STRONG tag and the A HREF tag? No, it means adding a way to control whether an element is displayed. This also includes how and where the element is displayed. To accomplish these tasks requires a couple of things: a way to get a handle any element on the page, and a way to control those elements with scripts.
