Now we are going to discuss the different formats in which you can save a file in Photoshop. There are many formats but we will talking about the important ones only.

Photoshop

This format is the most common format used by the current version of Photoshop. The file saved in this format preserves all Layers and Channels intact so that they can be modified later on. In Windows this is the most common format used by MS Paint. Bitmap file format can save up to 16 million colors. To save a file in this format select the format in Save as as BMP. When you click on the save option a dialog box appears, as shown in the Fig 4.9. In this dialog box you can specify the bit depth. There is an option box of lossless compression scheme called Run Length Encoding (RLE).

Compuserve GIF Format

This is the widely used format for web. The full form of GIF is Graphic Interchange Format and developed by Compuserve. The GIF format must be in Indexed Color mode, Grayscale or Bitmap mode. This format supports only 256 colors. There is an option in the dialog box, which appears when a file is saved in this format called interlacing. This option helps to render the image on the screen in stages and each successive stage making the image clear and sharper. This option is used for online services such as in web pages. Interlacing also makes the file highly portable.

The full form of TIFF is tagged file format. TIFF cannot save vector graphics but can save raster data. Macintosh and PC compatible computers use different "bit orders" for the TIFF file. When saving the file, you can specify the correct bit order for the TIFF file by clicking on the either of check boxes IBM PC or Macintosh. LZW compression option is a lossless compression scheme that does not throw data away when compressing.

JPEG Format

The joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) format is one of the most common formats used for images that are displayed in web. The images, which are in RGB, CMYK and grayscale color mode can only be saved as JPEG file. JPEG is a lossy compression scheme, which means it permanently removes essential color data from the image to conserve disk space. When you save an image in JPEG, which means after clicking the save button a dialog box appears in which you can specify the mount by which the image is to be compressed The Paintbrush Color eXchange format is developed for PC Paintbrush, which is an IBM DOS and MS Windows application by Zsoft. A PCX file can contain 16 million colors. The color modes required for a file to be saved in PCX format is grayscale, RGB and bitmap. No dialog box appears while saving a file in PCX format.

Photoshop PDF Format

This format enables you to save a Portable Document Format (PDF) files originally created with Photoshop. Adobe Acrobat uses this format for web publishing. Acrobat Reader software is used to read PDF files. This software can be used on Macintosh, Windows, UNIX, and DOS platforms. While saving an image in Photoshop PDF format a dialog box appears in which you can set the quality.
