Images can be included in your HTML document to make your Web page more appealing than text alone. Imagine an HTML document that contains some fairly dry material. Any such text can be made more convinaing by adding images to it. Images can often convey your message better than text alone. Imagine this book without any figures. Would it convey its message?. The old saying, "A picture is worth a thousand words" should be remembered here. Without figures, this book has to be put right back onto the shelf because it wouldn't look appealing. Till now, we've learned about the basic HTML required to add text to the document and how to format that text. In this chapter, we shall learn how to add images to the HTML documents. Downloading of graphics files are slow. The average user with a 14.4KBps modem will have to wait several seconds or even several minutes while a graphics file downloads. Many users don't have graphical browsers. Thousands of users are still using Lynx, for example, which is a UNIX based, text only browser. In addition, Internet Explorer and Netscape users might disable inline images in order to open Web pages faster. The two most popular image formats used are GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) and JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group). Both Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator, supports the above formats of image files. If the browser displays the images internally without the need of any external helper, they are called as inline images. , tag is used for including images in the HTML document. The tag has a few attributes, which can be mentioned if the user needs to format the image. This is an empty tag with three commonly used attributes, which are explained below. SRC - This is a mandatory attribute that specifies the URL of the image file. The tag is used to insert images into the document. The tag is actually a pointer for the image file.
