To save a file in the same format in which it was opened, choose Save from the File menu. In the dialog box navigate to the place where you want to save it. If you want to save a file in a different format, choose Save As from the File menu. Select the desired format from the Save As scroll window. If you want to save a file in GIF89a format choose GIF89a from Export from the File menu. Note that the color modes required for, exporting an image in GIF89a format are RGB and indexed color modes.

When you need to save a file and still want to continue working on the file with alpha channels, paths and layers intact, choose Save a Copy from the File menu. Check the Flatten Image check box to save the file with layers flattened. If you want to exclude alpha channel while saving then check Exclude Alpha Channel. Check Exclude Non Image Data to exclude non image data like paths, thumbnail preview, page setup information and guides. There is another check box called Save Thumb Nail to save the thumbnail. Use Lower Case Extension check box for saving the file in lower case extension.

For an image, which you are going to use in web, choose Save For Web from the File menu. This helps to optimize the files and gives all the information with respect to web such as down load time. It also gives the comparison of different dithering percentages.

The Import command in the file menu is used for importing an image using the TWAIN interface. TWAIN is a cross platform interface for acquiring images captured by certain scanners, digital cameras, and frame grabbers. Adobe Photoshop supports the current TWAIN 32 standard for scanning.
