The term well formedness indicates the minimum set of requirements that a document needs to satisfy so that it can be considered to be a valid XML document. To be well-formed, a document must conform to the following three rules:

The XML document must contain at least one element.

The XML document must contain a unique opening and closing tag that encloses the whole document. This is known as the root element. The elements contained within the XML document should be nested and they should not overlap.
The following example meets the requirements of a well formed document: <LIB>
<TITLE>mybook</TITLE>
<AUTHOR>myself</AUTHOR>
<ISBN>000-000-000</ISBN>
<PUBLISHER>the nobody's press</PUBLISHER>
</LIB>
